Anchored on God’s Deliverance

“If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.”

Daniel 3:17, ESV

In the face of impossible odds and unimaginable consequences, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood firm in their faith. Threatened with a fiery death for refusing to bow to Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image, they declared without hesitation their unwavering belief in God’s delivering power.

Their words ring through the centuries, a testament to the kind of faith that moves mountains and shakes kingdoms: “Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us.” It’s a statement of absolute confidence, a declaration that the God they serve is not just a God of theoretical power but of practical deliverance.

But what gave them such unshakeable assurance? How could they stand so resolute in such a terrifying threat? Their faith was rooted in a deep understanding of who God is. They knew Him as the God who parted the Red Sea brought down the walls of Jericho, and delivered David from the hand of Goliath. Their history was a tapestry of His delivering power, and they trusted that the same God who had rescued His people in the past would rescue them in the present.

This is the kind of faith we need in our fiery trials – a faith that isn’t just a vague hope but a confident assurance in God’s ability and willingness to deliver us. It’s a faith that looks beyond the flames of the present moment and sees the God who can bring us through unscathed.

But here’s the challenge: this kind of faith isn’t developed in a crisis. It’s cultivated in the daily discipline of trusting God in the small things, remembering His faithfulness in our past, and immersing ourselves in the stories of His delivering power.

“Faith is deliberate confidence in the character of God whose ways you may not understand at the time.” – Oswald Chambers

Oswald Chambers reminds us that faith is a choice to trust in God’s character even when His ways are mysterious. For Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, the path of deliverance was far from clear. The furnace blazed before them, the smell of death heavy. But they chose to trust in the unseen reality of God’s power rather than the visible threat of the flames.

But the key is to cultivate that faith now, in the daily choices to trust Him, to recall His faithfulness, to lean into His strength. In the quiet moments of devotion, we develop the unshakeable assurance that will carry us through the fiercest trials.

So let your declaration be the same as theirs: “My God whom I serve is able to deliver me.” Speak it in faith, believing that the God who has proven His delivering power through the ages will prove it again in your life. And as you trust in Him, watch as He brings you through the flames, refined and renewed by the power of His presence.

Godseekers, what furnace are you facing today? What circumstances seem insurmountable, and what odds feel impossible? Take heart from the example of these young men. The same God who delivered them stands ready to deliver you.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for being the God who delivers supernatural power. When the flames of trial rage around us, help us to trust in Your ability to bring us through. Remind us of Your faithfulness in the past, and strengthen our confidence in Your power in the present. May we, like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, declare with unwavering faith: “Our God whom we serve can deliver us.” Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. What past experiences of God’s deliverance can I recall to strengthen my faith in my current trial?
  2. In what areas of my life do I need to grow in my trust in God’s delivering power?

Step of Faith

Today, take a step of faith by praising God for His delivering power, even before you see the outcome of your current situation. Choose a specific verse or passage that speaks of His power (like Psalm 18:2 or Exodus 15:2) and declare it in faith throughout the day. Remember, faith is trusting God’s character, even when His ways are not yet clear.
