From Glory to Glory

and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

Colossians 3:10 (NIV

Without regular updates, a smartphone quickly becomes obsolete. It can’t handle new apps or connect with the latest technology. In the same way, we need spiritual updates to remain vibrant and effective in our faith. Our spiritual lives require constant updates. We need continuous transformation to stay connected with our Creator. This ongoing revitalization helps us function effectively in an ever-changing world.

Paul’s words to the Colossians reveal a profound truth about our spiritual journey. When he says we are “being renewed,” he uses a present continuous tense. This isn’t a one-and-done event, but an ongoing process. It’s as if God is constantly downloading updates to our spiritual software, refining and improving us day by day.

But what does this continuous change look like in our daily lives? It’s not about dramatic, overnight changes (though those can happen). More often, it’s the small, almost imperceptible shifts that accumulate over time. It’s the gradual evolution of our thoughts, the slow softening of our hearts, the increasing alignment of our will with God’s.

This spiritual renovation is deeply tied to knowledge. Not just head knowledge, but a deep, experiential understanding of who God is and who we are in Him. As we grow in this knowledge, we’re transformed. It’s like looking into a mirror and seeing not just our reflection, but glimpses of our Creator. With each new understanding, each revelation of God’s character, we’re molded a little more into His likeness.

“The Christian life is not a constant high,” admits Billy Graham, one of the most influential Christian leaders of the 20th century. His candid words remind us that spiritual growth isn’t always smooth sailing, but a journey of ups and downs. Graham’s honesty about his own need for God’s help in moments of discouragement encourages us to persevere, recognizing that even spiritual giants face challenges in their walk with God.

The beauty of this ongoing sanctification (Big word!) is that it’s not dependent on our own efforts alone. Yes, we have a part to play – we need to stay connected to the source, to “download” the updates through prayer, Scripture, and communion with God. But the real work of transformation is done by the Holy Spirit. It’s God who initiates and completes this renewal process in us (Philippians 1:6).

Understanding spiritual growth as an ongoing process brings both comfort and challenge. It’s comforting because it takes the pressure off trying to achieve instant perfection. We’re works in progress, and that’s okay. God is patient with our development. But it’s also challenging because it means we can never become complacent. There’s always room for growth, always another area where God wants to refine us.

This continuous transformation touches every aspect of our lives. It affects how we think, how we feel, how we relate to others, and how we view the world around us. As we’re reshaped in the image of our Creator, we begin to love what He loves, to see people and situations from His perspective. Our priorities shift, our desires change, and we find ourselves longing for the things of God more than the things of this world.

The process of changing from glory to glory can sometimes be uncomfortable. Just as physical growth can come with growing pains, spiritual transformation can be challenging. It might mean letting go of old habits, forgiving someone who’s hurt us, or stepping out in faith when we’d rather stay in our comfort zone. But each step of obedience, each “yes” to God’s refining work, shapes us more into His image.

Godseekers, embracing this ongoing process of spiritual renewal is key to a vibrant, growing faith. It’s about staying open to God’s transforming work in our lives, day by day and moment by moment. As we do, we’ll find ourselves becoming more and more the people God created us to be, reflecting His image with increasing clarity to a world that desperately needs to see Him.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the ongoing work of transformation You’re doing in our lives. Help us to cooperate with Your Spirit, to stay open to Your refining power. Increase our knowledge of You, and shape us more and more into Your image. May we never become complacent, but always be growing, always being renewed. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. In what areas of your life have you noticed God’s transforming work recently? How has this changed you?
  2. How has your understanding of God grown in the past year, and how has this knowledge impacted your daily life?

Step of Faith

Today, choose one area of your life where you feel God is calling you to grow. It might be a character trait, a relationship, or a spiritual discipline. Commit to taking one small step towards transformation in this area. Perhaps it’s setting aside time for prayer, reaching out to reconcile with someone, or practicing a new way of responding to a recurring situation. Remember, spiritual growth is a process – small, consistent steps can lead to significant change over time. Share your commitment with a trusted friend or mentor, and ask them to pray for you and check in on your progress.
