Habits of the Faithful Godseeker

Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.

Luke 22:39

The life of Jesus, a testament to the power of community in spiritual practices, teaches us the significance of regular, disciplined routines. His frequent retreats to the Mount of Olives were not solitary acts but a communal practice that strengthened his connection with the Father. This underscores the importance of consistent places and times of prayer and reflection within our faith community.

For us as Godseekers, developing such habits is crucial. It isn’t merely about religious observance but creating rhythms that keep our hearts and minds attuned to God. These practices are anchors, keeping us steadfast in a world that often pushes us toward chaos and distraction.

Consider the practicality of Jesus’s habits. His early morning prayers and intentional solitude were not mere escapes but strategic moments of empowerment. They equipped him to face the immense challenges of his mission. This offers us a practical template: regular engagement in spiritual disciplines like prayer, meditation, scripture reading, and communal worship can similarly empower us daily.

Moreover, these habits are not just for our benefit. They prepare us to be active participants in God’s work. When spiritually nourished, we are more effective in loving others, serving faithfully, and spurring one another on towards love and good deeds, as exhorted in Hebrews. Our spiritual routines help mold us into individuals who can bear the weight of communal responsibilities and the challenges of living out our faith in tangible ways.

However, forming these habits requires intentionality and commitment. It means setting aside specific times for spiritual activities, like appointments that cannot be easily postponed or canceled. It might involve early mornings, lunch breaks, evenings, or weekends—whatever works to ensure that these activities are not merely squeezed into our schedules but are a priority.

Creating a community of practice can also be incredibly supportive. Gathering with others for prayer or Bible study enhances our understanding and strengthens our commitment to these practices. The community has power that can uplift and sustain us, especially when our resolve might wane.

Additionally, consider the role of technology in supporting your spiritual habits. Apps for scripture reading, meditation, and prayer can help integrate these practices into our daily lives, making it easier to maintain them amid our busy schedules.

A renowned philosopher and spiritual mentor, Dallas Willard once remarked, “Habit is the very structure of character, and character pervades the whole life.” This insightful observation highlights our daily habits’ profound impact on shaping our overall character. By cultivating positive spiritual habits, we enhance our personal growth and ensure that our character reflects the values and teachings that guide us throughout our lives.

Remember that developing spiritual habits is a journey, not a destination. There will be days when we falter, but the goal is persistent effort, not perfection. Every day offers a new opportunity to deepen our commitment and refine our practices.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Your Son, who consistently sought Your presence through prayer and solitude. Help us to develop and maintain spiritual habits that draw us closer to You and empower us to serve Your kingdom. Give us the discipline and desire to meet You daily, strengthening our faith and community. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. Which spiritual habits do you practice, and how have they impacted your faith journey?
  2. What new habit can you start this week to deepen your relationship with God?

Step of Faith

Identify one spiritual discipline you wish to cultivate further or introduce into your routine. Commit to this practice for the next month, noting in a journal or digital diary how this habit affects your spiritual growth and everyday life. Invite a friend or family member to join you on this journey, sharing insights and supporting each other as you grow in faith together.
