Setting Your Eyes on Jesus

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Hebrews 12:2 NIV

A fresh start begins with a focused heart. In a world brimming with distractions, setting your eyes on Jesus can feel like a battle, yet it is the most essential step for a life lived with purpose. The writer of Hebrews reminds us to fix our eyes—not just glance or occasionally look—but firmly focus on Jesus. He is the author of your story and the finisher of your faith.

Jesus isn’t just the example; He’s the enabler. The Greek word for “author” (archegos) refers to a pioneer or forerunner—someone who blazes a trail for others to follow. Jesus didn’t just tell us to have faith; He lived it perfectly and made a way for us to walk in it. When your eyes are on Him, the fears and uncertainties of the new year are put into perspective.

“Faith never knows where it is being led, but it loves and knows the One who is leading.”Oswald Chambers, pastor and author of “My Utmost for His Highest.” This truth reminds us that focusing on Jesus isn’t about understanding every step of the journey but trusting the One who walks ahead of us.

The temptation to fix our eyes on temporary things is always present. We fixate on our goals, finances, relationships, or health, hoping they will bring fulfillment. While these things matter, they are not the ultimate source of your stability or joy. Jesus is the only constant who will never fail you. Fixing your eyes on Him keeps everything else in its rightful place.

Fixing your eyes on Jesus requires intentionality. It means choosing daily to meditate on His Word, to pray, and to reflect on who He is. When Peter walked on water in Matthew 14, he stayed afloat as long as his focus was on Jesus. The moment he turned his attention to the wind and waves, he began to sink. In the same way, your circumstances may overwhelm you if you lose sight of the One who holds you steady.

Jesus endured the cross with joy because His focus was set on God’s purpose. He saw beyond the immediate suffering to the glory that awaited. As you enter this new year, let His example inspire you. Even when challenges arise, you can move forward with confidence, knowing your Savior has already paved the way.

Godseekers, the best way to start this year is by fixing your eyes on Jesus. When you do, your priorities align with His will, your fears are quieted, and your faith is strengthened. Look to Him in every moment, trusting that He will perfect the work He has begun in you.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for being the author and perfecter of my faith. Help me to keep my eyes fixed on You as I walk through this year. When distractions or fears come, remind me that You are my steady foundation and my ultimate joy. Strengthen my faith and lead me closer to You each day. In Your name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. What distractions are competing for your attention as you begin the new year?
  2. How can you practically refocus your thoughts and actions to keep Jesus at the center?

Step of Faith

Today, take a few moments to meditate on Hebrews 12:2. Write down one specific area of your life where you’ve been distracted, and pray for God to help you refocus on Jesus. Make a plan to intentionally seek Him this week, whether through prayer, Scripture reading, or worship.
