Inviting Jesus in Resolving Conflicts

“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

Matthew 18:20 (NIV)

Imagine a disagreement between friends or family members where emotions run high and resolution seems out of reach. The very act of coming together in Jesus’ name transforms the situation. It invites His presence, bringing a sense of calm and a spirit of reconciliation that might otherwise be absent. Knowing that Jesus is with us can change how we approach these challenging conversations.

In Matthew 18:20, Jesus assures us that when two or three gather in His name, He is there with them. This verse provides a powerful reminder that we are never alone in our efforts to resolve conflicts; Jesus Himself is with us, offering His peace and guidance.

Consider the story of Paul and Barnabas in Acts 15. They had a sharp disagreement about taking John Mark on their missionary journey, which led to them parting ways. Despite this conflict, both continued to work for the Lord, and their ministries flourished. Later, Paul spoke warmly of Barnabas and John Mark, showing that reconciliation and mutual respect were eventually restored. This story reminds us that even in conflicts, Jesus’ presence can lead to positive outcomes and eventual reconciliation.

When we gather in Jesus’ name, we are invoking His presence symbolically and actively inviting His guidance and wisdom into our situation. This act of faith helps to shift our focus from winning an argument to seeking a resolution that honors Him. It reminds us that our ultimate goal is not just to resolve the conflict but to reflect Christ’s love and unity in our relationships.

Praying together before and during difficult conversations can invite the Holy Spirit to work in our hearts and minds, softening us and helping us see the issue from the other person’s perspective. It creates an atmosphere for true listening and understanding. Jesus brings a supernatural peace that can calm even the most turbulent disputes.

Think about a time when you faced a difficult conflict. How might it have been different if you had consciously invited Jesus into the conversation? Reflecting on His presence can give us the strength and patience to approach conflicts with grace and humility, seeking solutions that build up rather than tear down.

As we reflect on Matthew 18:20, let’s commit to inviting Jesus into our conflicts. Remember that He is with us, guiding us towards peace and reconciliation. His presence transforms our interactions, helping us to resolve disputes in a way that honors Him and strengthens our community.

Colossians 3:13 reminds us, “Bear with each other and forgive one another if you have a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” This verse ties in beautifully with our theme today, emphasizing that forgiveness and Jesus’ presence go hand in hand. Inviting Jesus into our conflicts empowers us to forgive as He forgave us, fostering a spirit of unity and healing.

As Paul Boese wisely said, “Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future.” This quote reminds us that while forgiveness may not alter what has happened, it opens up possibilities for growth, healing, and restoring relationships. By inviting Jesus into our conflicts, we embrace a future filled with His peace and guidance.

Godseekers, let us embrace the assurance that Jesus is with us in every conflict. Let us gather in His name, seek His guidance, and trust His peace. Doing so allows us to navigate even the toughest conversations with grace and wisdom, knowing that we are never alone.
