Known By God

O Lord, you have searched me and known me!

Psalm 139:1 (ESV)

The concept of being fully known can be terrifying. In our human relationships, we often carefully manage what others see, crafting our image and selectively sharing parts of ourselves. We fear that if people truly knew everything about us – our thoughts, fears, dreams, and struggles – they might reject us. Yet Psalm 139 opens with a remarkable declaration that God has already searched and known us completely.

The Hebrew word for “searched” (chaqar) paints a fascinating picture. It means to examine intimately, to search out with painstaking thoroughness, like a archaeologist carefully brushing away sand to reveal precious artifacts. This isn’t a casual glance or superficial knowledge. God’s knowledge of us is thorough, intentional, and deeply personal. He examines every layer of our being with careful attention and purpose.

David continues to unfold this divine intimacy throughout the passage. He describes how God knows when we sit and rise, understands our thoughts from afar, and is familiar with all our ways. Before a word reaches our tongue, God already knows it completely. This kind of knowledge surpasses human understanding – it’s both humbling and comforting to realize that someone knows us this thoroughly.

“To be loved but not known is comforting but superficial. To be known and not loved is our greatest fear. But to be fully known and truly loved is, well, a lot like being loved by God.”Timothy Keller (Renowned pastor, theologian, and author of “The Reason for God”). This quote perfectly captures the heart of Psalm 139:1 – God’s knowledge of us isn’t meant to frighten us but to assure us of His deep, unconditional love.

God’s knowledge of us is a cause of celebration. Unlike human relationships where deeper knowledge might lead to rejection, God’s complete knowledge of us is accompanied by complete acceptance through Christ. He knows our darkest thoughts, our hidden struggles, our secret fears – and He loves us still. This truth should transform how we approach both God and ourselves. Will you shape your life the way God wants you to?

Start sharing your real struggles in prayer to God. Confess your actual fears to Him, and celebrate your genuine victories. Remember, you’re not revealing anything to God that He doesn’t already know – you’re simply aligning your heart with the reality of His complete knowledge and perfect love.

Godseekers, the invitation before us is both challenging and liberating. In response to this profound truth of being fully known and fully loved, let us choose to live with radical authenticity towards God’s design; not ours. Do we see the way God sees us? Drop the masks, cease the performance, and step into the freedom of being exactly who God created you to be.

Prayer

Loving Father, thank You for knowing me completely and loving me perfectly. Help me rest in the security of being fully known and fully loved by You. Break down my walls of fear and pretense, and help me live authentically before You. Give me courage to embrace Your complete knowledge of me and to find freedom in Your unconditional love. In Jesus name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  • How does knowing that God fully knows you impact your daily life and decisions?
  • In what areas of your life are you still trying to hide from God, and why?

Step of Faith

Today, choose one area of your life that you’ve been keeping hidden from God and others. Spend time in prayer, acknowledging His complete knowledge of this area, and write down how His perfect love can transform your perspective about it. Consider sharing this insight with a trusted friend or mentor, allowing God’s perfect love to gradually break down walls of fear and isolation.
