The Courage to Share the Good News

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.

2 Timothy 1:7-8 (NIV)

Have you ever felt a flutter of fear when you thought about sharing your faith? Maybe you’ve imagined inviting a coworker to church or sharing your beliefs with a friend, only to feel a knot of anxiety tighten in your stomach. This feeling is all too common, and you’re not alone in it.

Reflecting on Paul’s words to Timothy provides profound insight. Timothy was a young leader facing significant challenges and fears. Paul, his mentor, was in prison, yet he wrote with such boldness: “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” Here, Paul uses the Greek word “deilia” for fear, which specifically means cowardice or timidity. This is not the normal human reaction to danger, but a crippling fear that paralyzes us from fulfilling God’s call.

Imagine Timothy reading those words. He was in a hostile environment, possibly feeling overwhelmed and inadequate. But Paul’s encouragement was clear: God has given us a spirit of power, love, and self-discipline. This means that even when we feel afraid, God has already equipped us with what we need to overcome that fear.

Think about the times in your life when you’ve relied on God’s strength. Perhaps it was during a difficult conversation, a moment of crisis, or a leap of faith. Those are the moments when His power shines through our weakness. Sharing the gospel is no different. When we step out in faith, God promises to be with us, providing the courage and words we need.

Consider Peter, who was transformed from a fearful denier of Jesus to a bold preacher at Pentecost. What changed? The Holy Spirit filled him with power and courage. Just as the Spirit empowered Peter, He empowers us today. We are not called to rely on our own strength but on the power of the Holy Spirit.

It’s important to remember that love plays a crucial role in our boldness. Genuine love for others fuels our desire to share the gospel. When we care deeply about someone’s eternal destiny, that love can overcome our fears. Jesus’ love for us drove Him to the cross; our love for others should drive us to share His message.

Self-discipline, or a sound mind, helps us stay focused and determined. It means making a deliberate choice to trust God rather than giving in to fear. It involves preparing ourselves through prayer, study, and practice. By cultivating a sound mind, we can approach evangelism with clarity and confidence.

Reflect on the opportunities around you—friends, family, coworkers, and even strangers who need to hear the good news. Pray for God to open doors and give you the courage to walk through them. Trust that He will provide the words and wisdom you need.

As Paul encouraged Timothy, let’s encourage each other. Share your experiences with fellow believers. Celebrate the small victories and support one another in the challenges. Remember, we are not alone in this journey. God is with us, and His Spirit is our strength.

Let’s commit to being bold for the gospel, knowing that God has given us everything we need. Take a moment to pray and ask for His guidance and courage. Then, Godseekers, step out in faith, trusting that He will use you in ways you can’t even imagine.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us a spirit of power, love, and self-discipline. Help us to overcome our fears and boldly share the gospel. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, and guide us in our conversations. Let Your love for others flow through us, and give us the courage to speak the truth in love. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. When have you felt God’s power and courage in a situation where you initially felt afraid?
  2. How can you prepare yourself spiritually and mentally to share the gospel with others?

Step of Faith

This week, identify one person you can share your faith with. Start by praying for them daily. Ask God to open a door for conversation and give you the courage to walk through it. When the opportunity arises, trust that God will guide your words and actions.
